Remembrance Day of the Armenian Genocide

Today, Annegret and I joined an Armenian friend and hundreds of thousands of other Armenians in a procession to the Armenian Genocide Memorial in Yerevan.

Every 24 April Armenia commemorates the more than 500’000 victims (this is a conservative estimate) of the Armenian genocide, which began on 24 April 1915 when hundreds of Armenian intellectuals who were later killed were arrested in Istanbul.

I admit I was first surprised to see so many people join the procession, it’s an endless stream of people who walk to the Memorial all day long to lay down flowers there. But our Armenien friend reminded us that almost every family in Armenia, and especially in Yerevan, has a story to tell about relatives who lost their lifes in the genocide.
